What Is a Mochito?
A classic Mojito is made by muddling fresh mint leaves with sugar and lime in a glass. Then, white rum is added, the glass is filled with ice, and topped with club soda.
In our Mochito, we replace the sugar and club soda with ginger beer, adding a tangy and gingery twist. We drip in a few drops of Angostura and pour gold rum over the ice at the end, creating a beautiful ‘float’. We finish with a few rings of chilli pepper, which add both a pop of color and a hint of spiciness. Just a little stir and… really, just try this bold an flavorful Mochito; it’s fiesta in a glass!
Β‘Salud!

Serving Tips & Pairings
- Spiced Appetizers: Serve Scampis Diaboliques or Quipe with Mochito: the spices and garlic do really well with the drinkβs chili and ginger kick.
- Snack: Serve with Totopos for a scrumptious exotic treat!
- Dessert: For a sweet combo, our Suspiros with citrus zest go great with the Mochito’s lime and spice. Or serve a scoop of refreshing Macedonia di Frutta with it.
Substitutions & Variations
- Ginger Beer Alternative: Use the zesty lemon cordial of our Limonata recipe, and top it off with club soda for a refreshing twist!
- Rum Substitutes: Swap rum for tequila for a vibrant agave flavor, or vodka for a smoother base. With vodka, itβs a bit like a Moscow Mule, but the chilli adds a fun twist!
- Heat Variations:
Instead of fresh chilli rings, use jalapeΓ±o slices or a dash of Tabasco for a different type of heat.
FAQs
The way we pronounce it is βmoh-chee-tohβ, with a ‘ch’ sound as in ‘chilli’ and the stress on βcheeβ.
And mojito is pronounced ‘moh-hee-toh’ with the stress on ‘hee’.
Gold rum – or amber rum – has a rich, smooth flavor because itβs aged in wooden barrels, adding touches of caramel and vanilla.
White rum is light and mild, usually not aged or just briefly, so it has a cleaner, simpler taste. Dark rum is aged much longer in special barrels, giving it a deep, bold flavor with sweet molasses and spicy notes.
The name mojito comes from the Spanish word ‘mojo’, meaning ‘magic potion’, referring to the drink’s refreshing mix of flavors.

Mochito
Ingredients
- 7 pieces fresh mint leaves
- 3 drops Angostura
- 20 cl ginger beer
- 45 ml gold rum
- 100 g lime
- 1/4 piece chilli pepper - very fresh, not too spicy
Instructions
- Start by washing the lime and chili thoroughly. Cut the lime into 8 large wedges and slice the chili into thin rounds.
- Place the lime wedges in a sturdy-bottomed glass. Muddle them thoroughly with a wooden muddler or the back of a wooden spoon, to release the fresh juice and the zesty aroma.

- Add a few drops of Angostura bitters over the ice to start the float...
- Pour the rum gently over the Angostura, completing the float.
